Overview

What takepayments offers UK businesses

takepayments supplies card machines and quotes for them individually. Its takepaymentsplus range adds smart features — product lists, live reporting and a management portal — on top of payment acceptance.

An important point: transaction processing runs through a separate agreement with the acquiring bank nominated by takepayments. The terminal and the processing agreement are two different things, each with its own terms.

Compared with our other partners, takepaymentsplus sits in the middle ground: more than a basic card machine, without being a full EPOS system.

At a glance

Three parts of a takepayments setup

Your total cost and service come from three layers. Understanding each one avoids surprises.

Layer 1

The terminal

The card machine itself — for example the A920 Pro or A77.

Layer 2

takepaymentsplus features

Product management, live reporting and the management portal.

Layer 3

The acquiring agreement

A separate agreement with the acquiring bank nominated by takepayments, which processes your transactions and sets transaction charges.

The full cost

What affects what you'll pay

takepayments directs merchants to request a quote. You'll also enter into and maintain a separate agreement with the acquiring bank it nominates, where transaction charges and other fees apply. The terminal alone doesn't determine your full processing cost.

  • Your card mix: debit, credit, commercial and international cards are often priced differently.
  • Monthly turnover, number of transactions and your average transaction value.
  • Whether payments are taken in person, online, by payment link or over the phone.
  • Hardware needs: how many devices, which model, and whether you rent or buy.
  • Any POS software, apps or gateway services you add on top of card acceptance.
  • Contract length, notice periods and any cancellation or exit conditions.
  • The separate acquiring-bank agreement and its transaction charges.

Preferential pricing

Access preferential payment rates through Merchant Collective.

We work with established payment providers to help businesses explore competitive, partner-negotiated rates that may not be available through standard public offers. We compare suitable options against your business needs, helping you understand the available terms before you decide whether to switch.

Eligibility depends on your business and the provider's terms. We can't guarantee a specific rate or that every quote will beat a direct offer.

Access to funds

Next-day settlement, with conditions

takepayments states that next-day settlement can be available, subject to the acquiring arrangement and conditions — including completing the terminal's banking-window function before the acquirer's cut-off.

That applies to terminal transactions. Settlement for e-commerce, payment-link or virtual-terminal payments may differ.

Next-day funding isn't guaranteed for every product or merchant, so we'll confirm it in your comparison.

Contracts

Commercial terms to understand

  • 01Terminal terms are quoted individually — there's no universal rental or contract length.
  • 02The acquiring-bank agreement is separate and has its own terms and charges.
  • 03Ask how the terminal and acquiring agreements end, and whether they end together.
  • 04Check hardware return and replacement arrangements.

Suitability

Who could takepayments suit?

Small retailers

Product lists on the device speed up a simple checkout.

Mobile businesses

The A77 is slim enough to carry all day.

Merchants wanting product management

takepaymentsplus manages products and categories on the terminal.

Businesses that rely on reporting

Live reporting plus a management portal for deeper detail.

Growing businesses not ready for EPOS

More capability than a basic machine, without a full integrated system.

Key strengths

  • Smart-terminal features without a full EPOS commitment.
  • Choice between a feature-rich and a pocket-sized device.
  • Product management and reporting on the device and online.

Trade-offs to weigh

  • Two agreements to understand: the terminal and the acquiring bank.
  • Online and remote options need confirming for your setup.
  • Not a full EPOS — bigger operations may need more.

When an alternative may fit better: For a full EPOS, compare Clover, Elavon Business Control or Worldpay 360. For a broad online toolkit, Worldpay eCommerce is worth comparing.
